| Use of PRB on Ontario Hazardous Materials Landfill | |
| Start Date: | 1/1/2001 |
| End Date: | 1/1/2027 |
| Location: | Ontario |
| Project Scale: | Active or Inprogress, Full Scale Demo, Pilot Scale. |
| Media Treated: | Liquid. |
| Clean up of Site Involved: | Site Characterization & Assessment, Treatment, Monitoring. |
| Site Condition: |
Landfill for fly and bottom ash associated with operations by OPG. Dissolved compounds:
|
| Proposed Site Usage: | Continued use as landfill. Protection of land and surface waterbodys adjacent to property. |
| Reasons for Success: |
Implementation of a detailed hydrogeological and geochemical assessment. Low cost material together with reduced maintainance costs will save over $2.5 million over a 25-year period compared against a pump-and-treat remedial approach (full-scale-PRB). Effective over long time (after three years of monitoring, the concentrations were still below regulatory limits). |

Technologies Used: |
Permeable reactive barriers (PRB) |
|
Description: Three reactive mixtures promoted reduction and adsorption of the pollutants, respectively. The project was the first PRB designed and installed to treat this suite of compounds in the world and has been used as a demonstration case by the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the Electrical Power Research Institute. |
