The Research and Development of technologies and approaches for the remediation, characterization and monitoring of contaminated sites is required to provide innovative solutions to meet market demands. Contaminated sites may require innovative or novel approaches to effectively address contaminants of concern that have unique physical, technical and even social barriers.

R&D on new technologies, solutions and processes is required to remediate contaminated sites:

  • Faster
  • Cheaper
  • More completely
  • More effectively
  • More sustainably (i.e. in situ, on-site)

R&D may be conducted on existing technologies to:

  • Expand the breadth of application (i.e. varying site conditions and/or contaminant mixes)
  • Increase the performance and efficiency (while reducing the cost)
  • Incorporate greener solutions (more sustainable practices)

Treatability Studies

Years of laboratory-to-field research have repeatedly demonstrated the strong correlation between laboratory bench scale treatability study results and achievement of remediation goals at field scale. Laboratory studies are a cost effective tool to determine key performance variables, which may reduce costs of field implementation and provide knowledge of performance prior to field implementation.

SiREM maintains a state-of-the-art treatability laboratory equipped with the instrumentation and staff to conduct high quality treatability studies to evaluate bioremediation, chemical oxidation, and zero valent iron based technologies to treat chlorinated solvents, perchlorate and many other recalcitrant compounds.

In situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) is an emerging technology that offers the potential for rapid removal of contaminants when correctly applied. SiREM offers a range of products and services to assess the potential for, and to optimize, ISCO remediation approaches.

  • Laboratory Matrix Oxidant Demand Tests. If refined measurements of oxidant demand are required for design /implementation of ISCO remedies then look to SiREM to provide high quality results in a timely manner.
  • ISCO Treatability Studies: SiREM, an industry leader in the area of treatability studies, can confirm the breakdown of contaminants by replicating site conditions in a laboratory chemical oxidation treatability study and answer the following questions. Will target compounds degrade to desired end products under site conditions? What application volume is required? Which oxidant is best?
